FEMA Outlines How to Store Food For a Storm

When a storm hits, you want to make sure that you are prepared, and FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is telling those who might have to ride out a storm how to store food. FEMA says that safety and enough food to last should be your main factor to keep in mind when a storm hits, including floods, snowstorms, hurricanes and tornadoes. However, if you plan well enough, you may be able to eat pretty well FEMA says that there are some things that you should have on hand, and the list is below, along with a hand held can opener and a gallon of water for each adult and pet, per day of the storm – at least three days minimum.

femaHere’s what you need to know. First, you should be storing food that isn’t perishable – which means they won’t spoil if they are stored for a while. You don’t want food that has to be refrigerated. You also don’t want food that you’ll have to cook or add water to. You can add a can of sterno if you want to warm up something. Also, avoid salt, because it makes you thirsty. Here are some tips that should be able to give you an idea what you need in your home.

 

  • Canned foods that you can just open and eat: Fruits, Meats, Veggies
  • Juices, milk, soup, sugar, salt & pepper
  • High energy foods like peanut butter and jelly, as well as crackers, granola bars and trail mix.
  • You should also have vitamins, because you need full nutrition.
  • If you have a baby then make sure that you have plenty of food for them, and make sure that if you have someone who is on a special diet to provide for them.
  • You may also want to have some comfort foods that won’t go bad. For example, instant coffee or tea, hardened candy, cookies and sweet cereals.
  • Also make sure that you store any medication you might need for the duration of the storm.
